Live Action vs Animation: Choosing the Right Format

November 28, 2025  ·  6 min read

"Should we film it or animate it?" This question comes up in almost every video project discussion. And the answer isn't obvious — both formats have genuine strengths, and the wrong choice can mean an expensive video that doesn't resonate.

Here's a practical guide to making the right call.

What Live Action Does Well

Live action video creates immediate authenticity. When you see a real person speaking directly to camera, your brain processes it as genuine human communication. It builds trust fast, particularly for:

  • Testimonials and case studies: Real customers speaking candidly is far more convincing than any animated endorsement
  • Physical products: If your product exists in the physical world — food, hardware, apparel — seeing and handling it is more powerful than drawing it
  • Founder/CEO messaging: Investors and partners often want to see the human behind the company
  • High-emotion brand stories: Documentary-style narratives with real people and real environments

Live action also signals certain things about a brand: established, human, physical presence. If these qualities are central to your positioning, live action reinforces them.

What Animation Does Well

Animation's superpower is that it can show anything. Abstract processes, invisible mechanisms, hypothetical scenarios, data flows, molecules, international locations, impossible situations — animation makes the unfilmable filmable.

  • Software and digital products: Animation can show how your product works conceptually, not just what it looks like on a screen
  • Complex processes: Multi-step workflows, technical mechanisms, invisible phenomena
  • Abstract value propositions: "Save time," "reduce friction," "get clarity" — animation can visualise these in ways live action cannot
  • International audiences: No talent, no accents, no location-specific visual cues that might alienate non-local audiences
  • Evergreen content: Animated video doesn't age the way live action does — no dated hairstyles, office aesthetics, or faces that have left the company

Animation also gives you complete control. You're not at the mercy of weather, talent availability, location access, or unexpected production day chaos.

The Cost Reality

Here's something that surprises many clients: high-quality animation is often cheaper than high-quality live action when you factor in all the costs.

A live action production that looks genuinely professional requires: a director, a camera operator, lighting equipment, a location (rented or scouted), talent (actors, makeup), and post-production (editing, color grading, music licensing). For a 90-second video, this adds up fast — often €5,000–€15,000+ for premium quality.

Our animated explainer videos start at €490 for AI-assisted video and €1,490 for full 2D animation. All-in, no hidden costs, no production-day surprises.

The Hybrid Option

Increasingly, the best approach is a hybrid: live action combined with animation. A real person on screen building rapport, with animated elements explaining the product or process that would be impossible to film. This combines the trust of live action with the explanatory power of animation.

We can incorporate hybrid approaches into our productions. Reach out if this sounds like it might fit your project.

A Simple Decision Framework

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Does my product exist physically? If yes, live action footage of the product itself is probably worth including — even if the overall video is animated.
  2. Is my value proposition something you can see and film? If yes, lean toward live action. If the value is abstract, invisible, or complex — lean toward animation.
  3. Will this video still be relevant in three years? If longevity matters, animation wins. If it's for a one-time campaign or a moment in time, live action is fine.
